Persuasive Writing Topic #4, NFL

SITUATION: Hundreds of millions of people watch American football every year and one of the highlights or “guilty pleasures” of the game are the big hits. People love to see them and pay to see them. But, do you know how great the cost is to the players who experience these powerful tackles that millions love to see? The concussions caused by these hits result in major brain damage for the players. Nevertheless, this barbaric game simultaneously produces 7.6 billion dollars annually for the National Football League. Despite the massive amount of money the NFL generates from this violent sport, the league only gives a maximum of $88,000 per year to assist players who suffer from dementia, Alzheimer’s, and/or other mentally degenerative diseases, which all result from and/or are intensified by severe brain trauma.

DIRECTIONS: Compose a persuasive letter to the NFL Commissioner encouraging him to spend more money on protecting players during their career and assisting them afterwards.
